Preparing Instructions... Please read BEFORE sending a file:
   * Using Connectad to submit electronic ads is the preferred method. While e-mail can be used, we think that you'll find Connectad is faster and easier than e-mail. If you would like help getting set up to use Connectad, just tell your Advertising Sales Rep, and we'll have someone come out to answer your questions and show you how easy it is!
   * Sending an ad file through Connectad does not automatically reserve space in The News-Gazette. You will need to call your Advertising Sales Rep to reserve space. Here is our deadline schedule.
   * Effective July 1, 2002, there will be a $30 charge for any electronic ad submitted to The News-Gazette that requires any fixes, changes, corrections or alterations. Please let us help you get set up to submit ads correctly the first time, every time!
   * The News-Gazette produces all ads using Quark Xpress 4 on the Macintosh platform.
   * For files created by an advertiser, the following formats can be submitted: tiff, eps, jpeg, pdf or original application file (acceptable programs listed below).
   * The following programs can be used to create the ad file:
 Multi-Ad Creator* 4.05 or older
 Quark XPress* version 3.32, 4.11, or 5.x
 Macromedia Freehand 10.0 or older
 Adobe Illustrator 9.0 or older
Adobe Acrobat 5.0 (Preferred format is a PDF file.)
Click here for more info about Acrobat
 Adobe Photoshop 7.0 or older
 CorelDRAW 10 or older
 MS Publisher2000 or older

All pictures used by you in creating the ad must be included with the Quark file before the ad can be inserted.
Both "screen" and "printer" fonts must be included with these native formats, otherwise The News-Gazette will have to substitute our fonts for any missing fonts. Ask your Ad Rep for a list of News-Gazette fonts, or if you have any other questions about pictures or fonts.
We recommend that you use the Quark "Collect for output" feature to assemble all the necessary files for submission into one folder.

Macintosh Users: Acrobat version 4...You can download our newsprint job option settings for Macintosh Adobe Acrobat Distiller version 4.x. Click here to begin this download.

Macintosh Users: Acrobat version 5... You can download our newsprint job option settings for Macintosh Adobe Acrobat Distiller version 5.x. Click here to begin this download.

(Netscape users will need to click & hold down their mouse button on the link, then choose "Save this link as"). After unstuffing the file, open the Acrobat 4.0 or 5.0 folder. Locate the Acrobat Distiller 4.0 or 5.0 folder. Transfer the "NGNewsprint.joboptions" to the Settings folder. Launch Distiller, select the NGNewsprint settings. Your Acrobat Distiller is now set up to send files with the correct newsprint settings.

Windows Users: You can also download the correct Windows 5.x Acrobat Job Option settings. Right-click here and select "Save Target As..." to begin this download for Windows Acrobat 5.x . After downloading the file, place it into your ProgramFiles: Adobe: Acrobat 5.0: Distllr directory. Launch Acrobat Distiller 5.0 and choose the "NGNewsprint.joboptions" setting.

   * Please do not submit files using this site if they are larger than 15 MB
   * Download compression utilities to compress your files.
   * Windows 95 users with Internet Explorer version 3.01 or earlier will need to download a newer version from the Microsoft site.
   * NAMING YOUR FILES!! Please limit your file names to 20 characters or less. Use alpha-numeric characters for your file names. Some programs such as Acrobat Distiller and Stuff-It will add their file extensions to your file name which causes a "missing resource fork" error when you try to choose your file for upload. Shortening the filename will remedy this error.
   * If you are using Netscape 3.x on your Mac and hear a beeping sound while uploading, there are two things you can do to remedy this annoyance: Netscape recommends dowloading the latest version of their browser from the Netscape site, or you can just turn down your sound before uploading.
   * America Online Users: If using the "AOL Browser", you may not be able to see a "Browse" button next to the file select text field at the bottom of the user fill-out form on the upload page unless you are using AOL version 5.0... otherwise, we recommend downloading the stand-alone Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator, or upgrading your AOL software to version 5.0. The "otherwise" options will be performed at your own risk.
   * All files except for PDF formats must be compressed using Stuff-It 6.x or Winzip . VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING Stuff-It ... Under your Stuff-It preferences in the "File" menu, make sure you "check" the boxes in front of "Encode Archive into Binhex Format" and "Delete Archive After Binhexing" and "Include Linefeeds In Binhexed File" (see below). If you neglect to change these preferences in Stuff-It, we may not be able to open, view or print your ad file.
   * All files must meet the following criteria...
1. The ad size must be correct. Click to see News-Gazette ad sizes.
2. Bleeds and knockouts must be correct for color ads.
3. Use only PROCESS COLORS and combinations of process for color ads. ALL "RGB" and "LAB" colors must be converted to CMYK, using Adobe Photoshop or other application. Do not assign any spot colors.
4. All color photos must be CMYK. All black & white and color photos should be toned for newsprint for optimum quality. Allow for a 38% dot gain for newsprint and use an 85 line screen or 200 pixels/inch for all newsprint jobs. For commercial jobs on white paper, use 300 pixels/inch or 133 line screen. For more details regarding toning, call our News-Gazette Pre-press Dept. at 217-351-5699.

   * Remember to include the following with your ad file (unless a PDF is being sent):
1. The original application file, created in the programs noted above only.
2. All fonts-screen and printer. This includes any fonts used in an eps. Do not use "city" fonts (Chicago, New York, etc) or menu styled fonts ("B", "I", or "B" & "I") as this can cause unreliable results.
3. All eps and/or tiff files that are included in the ad file including the source application file for an eps if necessary.

   * In order to be sure that the file publishes as you have intended, fax us a copy of the ad file. Fax to: 217-351-5386.
   * After uploading your file, you will immediately receive a confirmation from The News-Gazette Connectad Delivery server that the file was successfully transmitted. If you do not receive this confirmation, re-send the file, or check with your Ad Rep.

REMEMBER: All of the ad files should be compressed, using one of the following:

   * P.C. users should use Winzip , available from www.winzip.com
or download freezip from our site.
   * Mac users should use Stuff-It , available from www.aladdinsys.com
or download Mac Compressors.sea from our site.
